Maderno, Carlo
(1556-1629)
   Italian architect who in 1603 was given the task of bringing the construction of the basilica of St. Peter in Rome to completion and changing the pure central-dome plan conceived by Bramante and perfected by Michelangelo, his greatest predecessors in designing the church, into a basilican form. This task involved designing the present nave and the façade at the west end of the church.
