Massys, Quentin

Massys, Quentin
(1466-1530)
Flemish painter. Born and trained at Louvain, he travelled to Italy to study the works of art about which he had heard and came back with increased skill in the technique of perspective but otherwise did not fundamentally change the style of painting he had learned from his Flemish predecessors. He was highly regarded as a painter of portraits, and his twin portraits of the Dutch humanist Erasmus and his friend Pieter Gillis (1517) are well known.
